For dVerse’s Tuesday Poetics “let’s have fun, guys”.
0400 (4am) is the worrying hour, when all the mental fungi bloom.
White threads of worry have spread
from the tiny spores of doubt that
drifted in during the day,
lodging unnoticed in my mind.
All night they have grown,
permeating and penetrating
infiltrating my dreams.
Until I wake to find they have fruited
into strange ill-shaped fears.
And I am trapped,
running circles
in their enclosing fairy-ring,
hoping, but not believing,
that they will deliquesce
with the light of day.
Until I wake to find they have fruited
into strange ill-shaped fears.
That is a great metaphor – I know those ill-shaped fears. I really enjoyed the pace of this poem, and the detailing. Thank you.
Thanks Sarah. 🙂
And sometimes next morning I think “why on Earth did I wake up and worry about that” and sometimes I think “why did I think that was okay yesterday?”.
I enjoyed your extended metaphor, Kate, and am familiar with those white threads of worry that ‘spread from the tiny spores of doubt that drifted in during the day’. We don’t notice until we try to go to sleep or they wake us up in the early hours. A great play on words, too, in ‘running circles in their enclosing fairy-ring’.
Thank you Kim ❤
weeds are bad seeds

Oh my, an unnerving experience, well written Kate! I am sharing this interesting fact today: A “Armillaria Ostoyae” mushroom, in the Malheur National Forest, in the Strawberry Mountains of eastern Oregon, was found to be the largest fungal colony in the world, spanning an area of 3.5 square miles (2,200 acres; 9.1 km2).
That is so cool! 9km^2 of fungi… amazing!
Love the use of fungi as a metaphor… I can clearly see how nightmares can metamorphose into prisons or rings.
Thank you. I imagine them as deformed blobby things. Fairies aren’t always nice and tinkly either. 😀
You’ve built the atmosphere piece by piece. There is nothing left but hope. Great use of the prompt, Kate.
Thank you! ❤
I loved the whole poem but this part was my favorite.
“0400 (4am) is the worrying hour, when all the mental fungi bloom.”
Thanks ❤
6pm used to be the witching hour when the kids went nuts, fortunately we're past that one. Although maybe it's just shifted to 9pm, when I declare "It is now child-free time! I don't care if you go to bed, just go away!".
Wonderfully fraught “fungal” imagery! Exactly how suspicions and worries grow.
Thanks Dora 🙂
I love the metaphor of worry being like fairy rings that come up over night and haunt us in the daytime!
Beautifully penned, Kate, and I love your use of metaphors! Thank you for following my blog.
Thanks Eugi – I thought I was already following but wasn’t seeing the prompts. Maybe just too much in the reader, so I put it email. 🙂 I really like your prompts.
My pleasure and thank you, Kate.
