In response to Eugi’s weekly prompt, “crystal ball“:

No-one’s destiny is written in the stars.
It can’t be divined from tarot cards.
Gaze close enough at a crystal ball,
you’ll see silicon dioxide, and that is all.

Tea leaves tell nothing, so put down the pot.
Want the future foretold? Read the cereal box.
And what, on life’s journey, does this augur predict?
some settling of contents may occur during transit”.

I’ve always thought that particular disclaimer, usually preceded by “this product is sold by mass, not volume”, was an excellent metaphor for life. I went looking for it this morning, and found the current cornflake’s version to be “Some settling of contents may occur during shipping and handling” – I prefer transit to shipping, which implies a lack of agency. But I think the addition of handling is good.

  1. Perfect title and I like your analysis of the disclaimer on the cereal box. An excellent metaphor and love that last line. Brilliant piece and thank you for joining in.

  3. Great title and I really appreciate the clever second stanza. Thanks for sharing this.
